British ultra-luxury carmaker Rolls-Royce has finally launched the Dawn convertible sedan in India at a gala event in Mumbai. The car sports a premium price tag of Rs. 6.25 crores (ex-showroom) and is the second convertible vehicle in the company’s portfolio, after the Phantom Drophead coupe. The Rolls-Royce Dawn features a French-seamed soft top which the company claims is the quietest in the world, as a Rolls-Royce should be.

The Rolls-Royce Dawn is based on the Wraith Coupe, but the company says that 80 percent of its exterior cues are designed from scratch, giving it a fresh look. The soft-top roof can be operated in 22 seconds, provided the car is moving at speeds less than 50 km/hr. The soft top is also unique as it features no concave depressions seen in other convertibles. This also helps in keeping the wind noise down and making the car more aerodynamic.

The Rolls-Royce Dawn is powered by a 6.6-litre twin-turbo petrol engine that generates 563 BHP of power and 780 Nm of torque. This engine is mated to an 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox. Rolls-Royce says that the Dawn can do the 0 to 100 km/hr sprint in a quick 4.9 seconds. The car, in true Rolls-Royce fashion, has a wooden deck in the back with materials sourced from the Canadian luxury furniture maker Canadel.

The super-luxury convertible can now be booked on order. As with every Rolls in history, every Dawn can be personalised to a great extent. The name Dawn is also an interesting thing as it signifies something of a start and light whereas most of the Rolls-Royce cars are named after dark and oculus names such as Ghost, Phantom or Silver-shadow. The car will compete with the Bentley Continental Convertible.
