In September 2021, SUVs/crossovers dominated car sales
Car sales in September 2021 showed that come rain or shine, it is Maruti Suzuki which will rule the market.
The Alto from Maruti Suzuki topped the charts this time around by registering sales of 12,143 units, dethroning the Swift and Baleno which were leading sales in the months that passed.
Maruti’s Ertiga came second with 11,308 units, while the Kia Seltos was third (9583 units), followed closely by the Nexon compact SUV (9211 units) from Tata Motors.
Hyundai’s Creta was the fifth best-selling car this past month, having registered sales of 8193 units and during the same time, Maruti retailed 8077 units of the premium hatchback.
The Venue compact SUV from Hyundai was seventh with 7924 units, while in eighth place came the Eeco, 7844 units of which were retailed by Maruti last month.
Ninth place in the September 2021 car sales (top 25) chart was occupied by the Maruti Wagon R with 7632 units and in tenth place came the Tata Altroz with 5772 unit sales.
As can be seen from the chart, not many cars in the top 10 managed to register year-on-year sales growth. The shortage of semiconductors is still plaguing the industry and thus production has been affected across the board.
As a result, in the next 15 spots, only cars such as the Toyota Innova Crysta (4724 units), Maruti XL6 (3748 units), Honda City (3348 units), Tata Harrier (2821 units) and MG Hector (2722 units) posted YoY sales growth.
In all, the top 25 cars contributed to over 76 percent of total car sales in India in September 2021. Maruti had 7 models in the top 25, while Hyundai had 5, Tata 4 and Mahindra 3 cars.
