Tata Motors will introduce petrol-powered versions of the Harrier & Safari in FY2026

Tata Motors has officially confirmed the introduction of petrol-powered variants for its popular SUV models, the Harrier and Safari. Set to launch within the ongoing financial year (FY2026), this development marks a significant addition to the lineup, expanding the brand’s powertrain portfolio beyond diesel and electric options.

New TGDi Engine to Power Upcoming Models

Both SUVs will be equipped with Tata’s newly developed 1.5-litre turbocharged gasoline direct injection (TGDi) engine. This engine is tuned to deliver 168 BHP and 280 Nm of torque. Buyers will have the option to choose between a six-speed manual transmission and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. This unit is a step up from the existing 1.2-litre TGDi engine, currently featured in the Tata Curvv, which delivers 118 BHP and 170 Nm.

The petrol-powered Harrier and Safari will be positioned as slightly more affordable alternatives to their diesel counterparts, with an expected price difference of approximately Rs. 1 lakh across comparable variants and transmission choices.

First Petrol Offering for Second-Gen Models

This upcoming launch represents the first time the second-generation Safari and the Harrier will be offered with a petrol engine. The move reflects Tata’s broader strategy to diversify its powertrain offerings and appeal to a wider customer base, especially in light of shifting fuel preferences and growing demand for lower-emission options.

These petrol versions also follow a mid-cycle update that both SUVs received in late 2023, making this the most substantial powertrain update since then.

Harrier EV to Launch Ahead of Petrol Models

Before the petrol variants arrive in showrooms, Tata Motors is preparing to roll out the Harrier EV on June 3. The electric version of the Harrier is anticipated to offer a driving range of around 500 km on a single charge. It will also introduce Tata’s new dual-motor all-wheel-drive (4WD) system, positioning it as a flagship offering in the company’s electric vehicle lineup. The EV is expected to carry over much of the features from the internal combustion engine (ICE) version.

With these developments, Tata Motors continues to reinforce its commitment to offering a diverse range of drivetrain options, catering to both conventional and emerging mobility preferences in the Indian market.
