Tata Motors is set to expand its presence in South Africa with the introduction of the Nexon compact SUV. However, the model will be sold under a different name in the market and will be called the Tata Osprey.
The Osprey is expected to join Tata Motors’ South African portfolio during the third quarter of 2026. The company’s lineup in the country currently includes the Tiago, Punch, Curvv and Harrier.
According to Tata Motors, the new name has been inspired by the osprey, a bird of prey found in parts of South Africa. The company has also highlighted the SUV’s five-star Global NCAP safety rating as one of its key attributes.
In terms of features, the Osprey is expected to offer a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, touch-based climate control panel, 360-degree camera, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), voice commands, an electric sunroof, ventilated front seats and a 382-litre boot.
Tata Motors has not yet confirmed the powertrain options that will be offered in South Africa. In India, the Nexon is available with multiple engine choices, including a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 118 HP and 170 Nm, a 1.2-litre turbo-CNG developing 99 HP and 170 Nm, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine that delivers 113 HP and 260 Nm. Transmission options include manual, dual-clutch automatic and AMT gearboxes depending on the variant.
While the final specifications for the South African market are yet to be announced, the turbo-petrol engine is expected to be the most likely option for the SUV.
