Maruti is working on a new small car that will compete in the entry level segment.

Maruti Cross-Hatchback
The new Maruti hatchback will directly compete against the Renault Kwid

Renault launched its entry-level hatchback, the Kwid, back in 2015. Since its launch, it has been a game changer in its segment and has even affected the sales of the Maruti Alto. The segment has always been dominated by Maruti and to keep things in their favour, the company has started work on a new small hatchback that will have SUV-ish looks and high ground clearance.

The Alto usually fetches sales of around 20,000 units a month or even more, but of late, sales have been falling to 17,000-18,000-odd units due to the Kwid. The Kwid has been fetching an average monthly sales of around 8000-odd units easily.

The new hatchback from the Maruti stable will be lined-up directly against the Kwid. The details for the upcoming car are currently scarce. The only thing known now is that the car will be unveiled at the 2018 Auto Expo. The hatchback is likely to be offered with the same range of 800cc and 1.0-litre petrol engines that Maruti has been offering. It won’t be a direct replacement for the Alto, but expect the Alto K10 to be replaced by this vehicle.
