Volkswagen India to debut ID.2 electric hatchback in 2026, successor of the Polo
Volkswagen is preparing to enter the compact electric vehicle segment with the launch of the ID.2, a new EV positioned as a successor to the popular Polo hatchback. The ID.2 is expected to arrive in the market by 2026 and will offer a more affordable entry point into the brand’s expanding ID electric lineup.
Unlike the ID.3 and other larger ID models, the ID.2 will feature a front-wheel-drive layout and share its underpinnings with the upcoming Cupra Raval — a similarly sized EV developed under the Volkswagen Group umbrella. Both models will be built at the Seat plant in Martorell, near Barcelona, Spain.
The ID.2 is projected to be around 4.4 meters long and will serve as a compact, city-focused electric hatchback. Volkswagen aims to price the ID.2 below €25,000, positioning it as a cost-effective alternative to the current Golf, which is being phased out as part of the company’s broader shift towards electrification.
Battery specifications for the ID.2 are yet to be officially confirmed, but early estimates suggest it will offer battery options ranging from 50kWh to 80kWh, with a maximum driving range of approximately 400 km on a full charge. This range would place the ID.2 competitively within the small EV market, catering to urban and suburban drivers seeking practicality and efficiency.
In addition to the hatchback variant, Volkswagen is also planning a more rugged version — the ID.2 X — which will likely serve as the electric successor to the T-Cross crossover. The ID.2 X is expected to follow a year or so after the initial ID.2 launch, with a timeline pointing to 2026 or 2027.
As the small car segment transitions toward electrification, the ID.2 signals Volkswagen’s commitment to delivering accessible EVs without compromising on functionality or design. With production already lined up and a launch window approaching, the ID.2 represents a key milestone in the brand’s electrification strategy.
