Maruti keeps finding buyers for its small cars

In January 2022, hatchback sales remained poor for small and premium segments

Renault’s Kwid found more buyers in January 2022 than in December 2021 (1056 units)

The Maruti Alto topped the entry-level hatchback sales chart in January 2022 like it did a month ago and several months prior to that. By registering sales of 12,342 units, the popular small car remains relevant to many a car buyer to this day.

In second place came the Maruti S-Presso with 6292 unit sales, followed by the Renault Kwid (2344 units) and the Datsun redi-GO that found 273 new homes last month.

In all, the cars in the category registered combined sales of 21,251 units as opposed to 29,724 units during the same period a year before, which is a 28.5 percent reduction in sales year-on-year (YoY).

The GO did not fetch any buyers for Datsun last month

The Maruti Wagon R (20,334 units) took the top spot in the January 2022 hatchback sales chart with the Swift (19,108), also from Maruti Suzuki, tailing it.

Tata’s Punch came third having found 10,027 new buyers, while the second-generation Celerio was fourth with 8279 units to its name.

Hyundai’s Grand i10 NIOS was driven home by 6841 new customers this past month. It must be seen if the manufacturer suffers any consequences for its recent actions on Twitter with regard to the Kashmir issue.

Up next is the Tiago from Tata (5195 units), followed by the Maruti Ignis (1993 units), Hyundai Santro (1252 units) and the Mahindra KUV100 NXT (1 unit).

In all, the cars in the segment registered sales of 73,030 units together, which is a solid 12 percent increase in sales YoY.

All models in the segment suffered in January

It is of course the Maruti Baleno wich took the first spot in the premium hatchback sales chart for January 2022 with 6791 units.

Hyundai retailed 6505 units of the i20 last month and during the same period Tata sold 4525 units of the Altroz, while Toyota found 1347 new buyers for its Glanza premium hatchback.

The Volkswagen Polo (891 units) and Honda Jazz (588 units) continue to hang on by a mere thread and the entire segment, by registering sales of 20,647 units, posted a 45 percent decline in sales YoY.
