Along with the Mahindra Verito and NuvoSport, the Xylo is also likely to be discontinued to meet stricter BS-6 emission norms.
Shifting focus to meet stricter BS6 emission norms, Mahindra will phase out some of its slo -moving models over the next 18-24 months. The automaker hasn’t specified as to which models will be discontinued but it is likely that the Verito (including the Vibe), NuvoSport and Xylo will face the axe.
Like Mahindra, many other carmakers including Tata Motors, are reluctant to upgrade their older models that are not in good demand to meet BS6 emission norms as well as the new crash safety norms. The company’s top official have hinted that most of their products already meet the new crash safety norms. Except for the Bolero, all of its vehicles have airbags and ABS as an option. The Government of India has made it mandatory for all automakers to have airbags and ABS offered in their passenger cars from 1st July 2019. Previously, the deadline was 1st October 2019.
The company is currently working on the Bolero which happens to be the only car in Mahindra’s line-up which does not have airbags and ABS in any of the variants. In terms of new products, the company has lined up two new launches for the next FY. These include an MUV (codenamed U321) and a compact SUV (codenamed S201). The MUV will be positioned between the Toyota Innova and Maruti Ertiga (in terms of pricing) while the SsangYong Tivoli-based SUV will be positioned below the Mahindra Scorpio and will rival the Maruti Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and Tata Nexon.
